Invited participants must appear at the Telemundo Center, 2350 NW 117th Place, Miami, Florida 33182, on November 3, 2018 between 8:30am and 10:00am Eastern Time (“ET”), to complete registration by presenting a photo ID and signing any required Hackathon agreements and releases. If you are not available for registration by 10:00am ET, you may be disqualified. All times listed in these Official Rules are Eastern Time, and Sponsor shall be the official timekeeper for all matters related to this Hackathon.
TEAMS: You may compete on a team of one to seven people. However, Sponsor may increase the maximum team size at any time in Sponsor’s sole discretion. You can form your team before November 3, or you can join or recruit teammates at a “team pitch” session at the Hackathon, beginning at approximately 11:00am on November 3. Hackathon personnel will provide you with instructions on how to register your team on the (“Teams Website”). All teams must register on the Teams Website before the end of the day (11:59:59 pm) on November 3. Unless otherwise announced, you may compete on only one team.
All members of your team must meet the eligibility criteria contained in these Official Rules. If any member of your team is ineligible under these Official Rules or otherwise fails to comply with the Comcast NBCUniversal Hackathon Participant Agreement at: http://www.nbcumedialabs.com/en/miami-hackathon-participant-agreement-2018/ (“Participant Agreement”), the team as a whole may be disqualified in our discretion.
HOW TO ENTER: To be eligible to win a prize in the Hackathon, your team must develop a software application or platform (“Prototype”) that meets the design requirements of the challenge described on the official website http://www.nbcumedialabs.com/en/hackathon-miami-2018/ (the “Challenge”). There will be one (1) Challenge presented. Challenge is subject to change.
Submission: Your team must complete and submit its Prototype on the Teams Website before the end of the “Hackathon Period,” which is the 24-hour period beginning at approximately 12:00pm on November 3 and ending at 12:00pm on November 4. Instructions will be provided on how to submit your Prototype. Unless otherwise announced, each team may submit up to three Prototypes.
Demonstrations: Following the Hackathon Period, each team will have three (3) minutes to demonstrate its Prototype to the judging panel, followed by a brief question and answer session with the judges. Demonstration time limits may be shortened or lengthened depending on the number of teams. The order of demonstrations will be decided by Sponsor in Sponsor’s discretion.
JUDGING: Each Prototype will be evaluated as described below:
Grand Prize, First Runner Up, Second Runner Up: After the team demonstrations, a panel of judges will deliberate and then rate each team’s Prototype, using the following combination of judging criteria:
Innovation (0-25 points)
• Has the team created something that no one has seen before?
Implementation (0-25 points)
• Reach – How well can the concept be applied across the company in its entirety; e.g. How many business units will be able to utilize the concept effectively?
• Implementation – How seamlessly could this concept be integrated across business units?
Challenge Fit (0-25 points)
• What is the potential for this concept to leverage emerging technologies to introduce innovative new ways to tell stories, foster deeper fan interaction and/or promote community engagement with our brands and content?
Technical Execution (0-25 points)
• How has the team effectively utilized the available technologies?
• How easy is the application to use?
• How advanced is the prototype presented?
The points awarded for the four criteria above will be added together, resulting in a total score of 0 to 100 (“Score”). Judges will have the right to adjust their respective scores after review and consultation with other judges. The team that receives the highest Score will be declared the Grand Prize winner of the Hackathon (“Grand Prize Winner”) and will win the Grand Prize, as defined below. The team with the second highest Score will be the first runner up (“First Runner Up”) and will win the First Prize, as defined below. The team with the third highest Score will be the second runner up (“Second Runner Up”) and will win the Second Prize, as defined below. Grand Prize Winner, First Runner Up and Second Runner Up may be referred to herein as “Winner” or “Winners”.
In the event of a tie, the team with the highest score for “Implementation” will be selected. In the event there is still a tie, the tied entries will be judged by successive, tie-breaking judges until a Winner is determined.
Judges’ decisions are final and binding, and the judging panels are subject to change in our discretion. When multiple judges are evaluating a Prototype, the average of all judges’ scores will be the final score for that Prototype.
PRIZES: There will be three (3) prizes awarded. There will be one (1) grand prize (“Grand Prize”) awarded to the Grand Prize Winner; one (1) first prize (“First Prize”) awarded to First Runner Up, and one (1) second prize (“Second Prize”) awarded to the Second Runner Up.
• Grand Prize will consist of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000). ERV of Grand Prize is Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000).
• First Prize will consist of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000). ERV of First Prize is Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000).
• Second Prize will consist of Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500). ERV of Second Prize is Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500).
Grand Prize, First Prize, and Second Prize will be referred to herein as “Prize” or “Prizes”. ARV of all Prizes is Seventeen Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($17,500).
In addition, teams submitting Prototypes are eligible to win prizes offered by sponsors, technology partners and other companies associated with the Hackathon (the “Optional Contests”). The judging procedure and prizes for the Optional Contests, if any, will be announced in person at the Hackathon. Optional Contests are subject to change. You acknowledge that Sponsor, Comcast and their affiliated entities have no responsibility for the administration, judging or prize fulfillment of any Optional Contest. For avoidance of doubt, teams can attempt to win any number of Optional Contests, but no more than one Prize, unless otherwise announced.
WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT AND VERIFICATION: We will announce potential Winners at approximately 6:00pm ET on November 4, 2018 (subject to change). If we receive a larger than expected number of Prototypes to review, we may postpone judging and winner announcements until after November 4, 2018.
Every member of a winning team will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility, release of liability, and, except where prohibited, publicity release no later than one week after receipt. Failure to return signed paperwork will result in your team’s disqualification and, time permitting, an alternate winning team will be selected.
We reserve the right to take any actions necessary to verify a team’s compliance with the Participant Agreement (including these Official Rules) before awarding a Prize, including, without limitation, engaging a third-party vendor to evaluate the Prototype software code and/or requiring a team to provide evidence of permission to use certain third-party materials. Even though your team may be announced as a Winner at the Hackathon, if your team’s compliance with the Participant Agreement (including these Official Rules) cannot be verified to our satisfaction, your team will be disqualified, and, time permitting, an alternate Winner will be selected.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Your team must create a Prototype using only Technology (defined below) that your team owns or has permission to use. This could mean that you or a teammate created the Technology, acquired ownership of the Technology from a third party, or may rely on binding written statements by a third party that owns or has the right to license the Technology indicating that you (or members of the public generally) are authorized to use that Technology in the manner you intend to use it. Your team will be disqualified if we have any reason to believe that your team has violated the terms of this paragraph. You should consult with appropriate advisors or legal counsel if you have any doubt as to whether you are meeting the requirements of this paragraph. “Technology” means, without limitation, software code, specifications, technical information, algorithms, data, and any other information or materials protected by any intellectual property right. Your team may bring to the Hackathon any pre-developed or licensed Technology that you plan to use in connection with your Prototype, provided that this Technology meets the requirements of this paragraph.
PRIZE CONDITIONS: All details of Prizes (excluding prizes for Optional Contests) will be determined by Sponsor in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Each Prize will be split equally among the team’s members. If your team wishes for a different Prize allocation, a representative from your team may inform Sponsor or BEMYAPP by 5:00pm ET on November 9, 2018. Ticket prices do not include transportation to the event city or event location. For prizes that include the opportunity to pitch ideas to a company, all team members will be required to sign that company’s pitch submission agreement and any other required agreements. Winners of VIP backstage prizes may be required to submit to a background investigation and may not be eligible to receive the prize unless we obtain satisfactory results (as determined by us in our sole discretion). We reserve the right to substitute a similar prize (or prize element) of comparable or greater value. All taxes and other expenses, costs or fees associated with the acceptance and/or use of any Prizes are the sole responsibility of winners. Prizes cannot be transferred or substituted by winner. If required by federal law, Sponsor or BEMYAPP will furnish an Internal Revenue Service Form 1099 to Winner(s) for the approximate retail value of the prize for the tax year in which the prize was won. Please allow sixty (60) days for delivery of Prizes. Sponsor or BEMYAPP will allocate the total value of a winning team’s Prize(s) equally among the team members for income tax purposes unless otherwise requested by the winning team in writing no later than 5:00pm ET on November 9, 2018.
In addition, you and/or your entire team may be disqualified and asked to leave the premises for any of the following actions, with or without warning, in our sole discretion: (a) verbal abuse of another participant or Hackathon staff; (b) inappropriate touching or harming of another participant or Hackathon staff; (c) breach of, violation of, or non-compliance with the Participant Agreement (including these Official Rules) or any other agreement entered into in connection with the Hackathon; or (d) violating the spirit of the Hackathon or acting inappropriate in any way.
If Sponsor has reason to believe that you or your team has attempted to compromise the integrity or the legitimate operation of this Hackathon or any of Sponsor’s business operations, including, without limitation, by cheating, hacking, creating a malicious bot or other automated program, or by committing fraud in any way, your team will be disqualified and asked to leave the premises, and you may be subject to additional legal action.
All disqualification decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
